| Chicago Kids -- Child Safety Tips
From the Chicago
Police Department
• Report missing children immediately to police, call 911.
• As early as possible, teach your children their full name, address, and phone number
(including area code). Make sure they know where they live.
• If your child wears clothing with his or her name on it, be sure that he or she knows that
this is a way a stranger will know his or her name.
• Parents should have knowledge of the places their children frequent.
• Keep current photos and fingerprints of your child.
• Know your child's friends, their names and addresses and who their parents are.
• Learn to talk and listen to your child. Encourage them not to keep secrets from you.
• Never leave small children unattended in a car, a shopping center or in a grocery cart.
• Teach your children to be alert as to someone suspicious hanging around, driving around
in a car, van or truck. Teach them to write down the license number and/or make of the
vehicle and parents should report this to police. Kids should also be alert for strangers telling them someone they know is in trouble or needs help.
From the Klaas Foundation
• I will always play or go places with at least one other person instead of alone.
• I know by body belongs to me. I will trust my gut instinct. I will say NO and run away from
a situation that doesn't feel right.
• I will always tell my parents where I am going and when I will be home. I will return home
before dark.
• I will play and walk on the routes that my parents said were OK. I will avoid shortcuts or alleys.
• I will not accept candy, money, gifts or rides from any adult without my parents permission.
• I will not engage in dialogues with adults I do not know. I will back away from them if they try
to talk to me.
• I will always lock my home and car doors. I will not admit that I am home alone.
• I will learn to dial 911. I will learn to use a pay phone without money.
• I will not allow adults to trick or force me into going places or doing things I like: help find
pets, carry packages, take pictures, play games, or take drugs with them. I will always check with my parents first.
• I will always walk against traffic on the sidewalk.
