All Chicago residents driving and/or parking a vehicle for which they are responsible in the City of Chicago are subject to the Chicago Wheel Tax and must purchase a Chicago City Vehicle Sticker. This includes Chicago residents that maintain their registration outside of the City of Chicago, but use the vehicle in the City.
Per City ordinance, a $60.00 late fee — $30.00 for senior-discounted Stickers — must be applied to all Chicago City Vehicle Stickers purchased after the end of the designated purchasing grace period (30 days for new Chicago residents/vehicle purchases; 15 days for Sticker renewals). If you moved to Chicago or purchased a vehicle within the past 30 days, please click here for details about documents we accept as proof of move-in date or purchase date. Beginning July 1, 2016, the grace period for late fees will be 30 days, but there will no longer be a grace period for tickets. Hence, a vehicle with an expired City Vehicle Sticker may receive a ticket the 1st day after the City Sticker expires.
Failure to comply with the Chicago Wheel Tax program may result in a $200 ticket per day.
Chicago residents living within an established Residential Parking Zone may be eligible to purchase a Residential Zone permit for their City Vehicle Sticker.
Per Municipal Code Chapters 3-56-020 and 9-68-020.
